Types of fertilization

Fertilization is an essential process in sexual reproduction. It fuses the gametes thus restoring  the chromosomes number specific for the species.there are two types of fertilization, external and internal.

A quick warm up

1- Define fertilization.
The fusion or the union of sperm nucleus and an egg nucleus.

2- What is the importance of fertilization in sexual reproduction.?
It restores the chromosome # characteristic of the species.

Embryonic Development

We Will follow the development of a fertilized egg from a zygote  to a baby. It’s fascinating to see how a single cell develops  and grows into a complete baby.

check your vocabulary through these introductory questions and follow the power point presentation to check your understanding of the process of development

Embryonic Development

How Does A Zygote develop into An Embryo?

Define the term embryonic development.

The changes from a zygote to a baby.

What will happen to the zygote after fertilization?

It undergoes the process of cleavage.

What is the end result of cleavage?

A  ball of cells called a morula is formed, then changed into a blastula.

Sexual Reproduction

Sexual reproduction:
Involves two parents.
Results in offspring that are different from either parent.
The genetic variation is due to recombination of chromosomes.
This process involves the fusion of two gametes nuclei (egg& sperm).
Fusion of the sex cell nuclei occurs during fertilization forming the zygote.

Meiotic cell division Meiosis

Facts about meiosis.

Meiosis involves two cell division.
It produces cells that are different from the parent cell. Each cell has .one-half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
Meiosis takes place during sexual reproduction, producing sex cells ( eggs & sperms ).
It takes place in the sex organs (ovaries & testes)

Let us explore how meiosis  happens.

The Cell Membrane -CM- ( structure & function)

As you already know your body is made up of billion of cell-the basic units of structure and function of all living things. Each cell has a cell membrane, that surrounds the cell  thus each cell  has its own environment. The cell membrane is acting like a guard that identifies what molecules leave or enter the cell. in this way  a stable internal environment is maintained (maintaining internal cellular  homeostasis).

microscopic structure of the cell membrane

Check this link for the detailed structure of the cell membrane.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/da/Cell_membrane_detailed_diagram_en.svg/75px-Cell_membrane_detailed_diagram_en.svg.png

The cell membrane is picky, decides what molecules pass in and out of the cells. Diffusion and active transport are the two processes that control the mechanism of transporting molecules through the cell. Cells communicate through receptor molecule on the cell membrane. These receptors recognize  and respond to messages received from other cells. Examples of these signals received are hormones, neurotransmitters.

To educators

You know that our  job as teachers has been  changed to a  facilitators role .We all agree renaming our profession is  not what it matters. As a teacher  and an academic person I believe we have to modify our role and adapt instruction to any format that deliver the lesson to the learner in a constructive process.  At the same time, for  the benefit of the student teachers should introduce the lesson as an initial step ,spaced  by differentiated instructional  activities based on Garner’s theory of multiple intellegencies.

Enzymes reduce the activation energy  needed for chemical reaction to occur. Enzymes are involved in all metabolic reaction that sustain life. Examples of these reaction are, digestion, synthesis, respiration, and photosynthesis. Review the power point presentation to see how enzymes work.

The Process Of Photosynthesis

photosynthesis is the process that provides a link between the source of energy (the sun) and all organism. It  captures the sun energy and store in a form usable by organisms.

Sun (energy)———-Photosynthesis———-Plants——–Organisms.

autotrophic organisms carry out the process of photosynthesis. Plants (leaves) and algae have adaptations (have chlorophyll),that absorb the sun energy. The products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen.
